Bill the Bastard – Australia’s Greatest Warhorse
About Us
Standing proudly at the corner of Albury Street and Burley Griffin Way in Murrumburrah, the life-size bronze statue of Bill the Bastard is a striking tribute to one of Australia's most legendary warhorses and a testament to local Hilltops artistry and community spirit.
A Heroic Legacy
Bill, a formidable 17.1-hand chestnut stallion, earned his unflattering nickname due to his notorious temperament. Initially deemed unrideable, he was relegated to packhorse duties during World War I. However, under the guidance of Major Michael Shanahan, Bill's true potential emerged. Their most renowned feat occurred during the Battle of Romani in 1916, where Bill carried Shanahan and four stranded Tasmanian soldiers to safety under heavy enemy fire—a remarkable display of strength and courage that solidified his place in military history.
Artistic Tribute
Local sculptor Carl Valerius, inspired by Bill's story, dedicated years to crafting this detailed bronze sculpture. Depicting Bill with five soldiers aboard, the statue captures the essence of this extraordinary rescue. Unveiled in December 2021, it stands as a centrepiece in the 1st Australian Horse and Australian Light Horse Memorial precinct, honouring the region's significant contribution to Australia's mounted military heritage.
This monument not only commemorates a remarkable warhorse but also reflects the enduring spirit of the Harden-Murrumburrah community and their dedication to preserving Australia's rich military history.
