The Cherry Capital of Australia with deep gold rush roots

Young is the largest town in the Hilltops region of New South Wales and serves as a key commercial, service and community hub for the surrounding district. Located in the Southern Tablelands, Young blends strong agricultural foundations with a working regional economy and an active local business community.

Originally known as Lambing Flat, the town rose to prominence during the 1860s gold rush. This period shaped much of Young’s early development and remains an important part of its identity today. The town’s history is reflected through preserved heritage buildings, local museums and walking trails that trace its gold-era past. A significant site is the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Gardens, which commemorates the experiences and contributions of Chinese migrants during the gold rush and stands as a place of reflection and reconciliation.

Young is best known nationally as the Cherry Capital of Australia, a title earned through its long-standing cherry-growing industry. The town hosts the annual National Cherry Festival each December, celebrating the cherry harvest with community-led events that highlight local growers, businesses and organisations. Cherry orchards remain an important part of the local economy, alongside a broader agricultural base.

The surrounding district is also home to a number of boutique vineyards producing cool-climate wines. These vineyards contribute to the region’s diversification and support local tourism, hospitality and small business activity, with several offering cellar door experiences.

Community life in Young is active year-round, with regular markets, cultural events and local festivals providing opportunities for connection and collaboration. As a regional centre, Young supports surrounding towns and villages through essential services, employment, education and business activity.

Young is a town shaped by its history but firmly focused on the present — a place where local businesses, producers, creatives and community groups play a central role in supporting one another and sustaining the region’s future.
