Just 4 km from the centre of Young, the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Garden is a beautiful and tranquil space that honours the legacy of Chinese miners who helped shape the region during the 1860s gold rush. Built in 1992, the garden combines cultural storytelling with natural beauty — offering a quiet retreat for reflection, relaxation, and connection.
During the height of the gold rush, thousands of Chinese miners arrived in the Young district. Their hard work contributed significantly to the local economy, but they were met with hardship and racial conflict, culminating in the Lambing Flat riots of 1861. The garden acknowledges this painful chapter with symbolic sculptures, plaques, and traditional Chinese design elements that educate and commemorate.
Cross a curved stone bridge guarded by marble lions to enter the garden. Meandering paths lead through manicured lawns and blossoming trees toward the Pool of Tranquillity — a scenic water feature ideal for quiet reflection or family photos. Sculptures throughout the space blend Chinese and Australian elements, and wildlife such as ducks and swans often make an appearance.
The garden is family-friendly, wheelchair accessible, and pet-friendly for dogs on leads. Amenities include toilets, shaded picnic tables, barbecue facilities, and plenty of space to stretch out. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic, rest stop, or cultural experience.
While you’re in the area, visit Chinaman’s Dam or the Lambing Flat Folk Museum to explore more of the region’s Chinese heritage. This is a must-see location for anyone interested in history, nature, or a peaceful afternoon surrounded by beauty.
