Irish Heritage | Wool History | Welcoming Community

Boorowa is a historic rural town in the Hilltops region of New South Wales, known for its strong Irish heritage, long association with fine wool production, and a close-knit agricultural community. Set among productive farming country, Boorowa has retained its village character while continuing to play an active role in the regional economy.

The town’s Irish influence dates back to early European settlement, when Irish immigrants were drawn to the area by pastoral opportunities. This heritage is reflected in Boorowa’s architecture, street names and cultural traditions. Many of the town’s historic buildings remain well preserved, contributing to a streetscape that reflects its 19th-century development. Local history is shared through the Boorowa Courthouse Museum, which documents the stories of early settlers, farming families and the evolution of the district.

Boorowa is nationally recognised for its wool industry, particularly fine Merino wool, which has underpinned the local economy for generations. This legacy is celebrated each year at the Boorowa Irish Woolfest, held in October. The festival brings together agricultural producers, local businesses, artists and the wider community, with events including the running of the sheep, markets, exhibitions, parades and live entertainment. Irish music, dance and cultural elements remain a strong feature of the festival, reinforcing Boorowa’s unique identity.

Beyond wool, the surrounding district supports a diverse and productive farming sector, with canola, grains and other broadacre crops forming a significant part of the local agricultural base. These industries support transport, services, trades and local businesses across the town and wider region.

Community life in Boorowa is closely tied to its agricultural calendar. Events such as the Boorowa Show and Boorowa Picnic Races bring residents and visitors together, showcasing rural skills, local produce and long-standing traditions of volunteer-led organisation.

Boorowa is a town shaped by land, heritage and community effort — a place where local businesses, producers and residents continue to support one another, maintaining the rural warmth and resilience that define this part of the Hilltops region.
